Pierre

Pierre Yonas lives on a small street in southern Paris. As I do before each meeting with a medium, I speak to my father out loud. The neighborhood is deserted at this hour of the morning. As I walk, I ask him again to be kind enough to make an effort to tell the medium what is hidden in the casket. I don’t know how he will take it, what this means for him, but I have realized that it is not as simple as I thought, even if I can’t quite figure out why.

In fact, I don’t know where my father is.

I don’t know if time has taken its toll, if he is still the same person as the one I knew. I don’t know what he does, what he looks like, or what the world he lives in looks like.

In fact, I don’t know anything. Except the fact that he is alive.

Which is already pretty good, I’d say. I know there is a form of life after death. But beyond this observation, I am noticing that my questions have become even greater in number than before. And death remains foreign to me behind the immense wall of fog.

As I approach Pierre’s place I list out loud, one more time, the objects I placed with my father. I add, insistently, that if he is not capable of giving me the names of all of the objects, I would like him to try to talk about the book, The Tartar Steppe, and the compass—I know, not the easiest ones to choose.

I met Pierre years ago, during the filming of Extraordinary Investigations,12 the documentary series I was presenting on channel M6. Pierre is a medium, but he is also a healer and a seer, three activities that he manages with ease and vigor. I am very confident because I know his abilities, but at the same time I can’t help but be worried. In my recent meetings I have seen just how much the emotional parameters, such as a medium’s stress level, can interfere with a séance, never mind other, even more mysterious factors.

No, communicating with the dead is not so simple. I really hope that Pierre and my father are going to be able to make it happen.
