Chapter 18
They parked around behind the building with the other tenantsâ cars and walked around on the sidewalk to the front entrance. Dalton reached into his pocket and took out his keys as they approached the landing.
âIt smells like an Indian restaurant up here.â
âIs that curry?â
The instant Dalton opened the door and stepped into the office, the full smell of the cooking hit him.
âOh, my friends,â called Mr. Singh with that Indian accent, as he rushed across the office.
âWhat are you doing here, Singh? Why are you making food in my office?â
The smile left Mr. Singhâs face as he shook a wooden spoon in the air. âIt is only my rice cooker and wok. I am Indian. I have to have good food, not that crap you Americans eat, hamburgers and hotdogs. I wouldâve been dead long ago had I not known from the first day I landed in this country that what you call âfoodâ is merely a formula to put you in an early grave. That is why I make curries, the best in the world, the way my mother taught me to make them.â He turned and walked to the rice cooker.
âSingh, youâre in my office. This isnât your apartment. What are you doing here?â
Nick walked over to the cooking food. âHow long before that stuff is done?â
âI know I told you I would go back to India. I was praying all the way to the airport. I must have prayed the same prayer hundreds of times, and then it came to me: Mr. Dalton, this isnât just some artifact dug up in the desert somewhere. If the treasure of Solomonâs mines is as vast as everyone believes, it could change history. I want to be part of that.â
âListen, a friend of mine was shot tonight. All I want to think about right now is finding this Gregory guy that shot him.â
âI would be doing the same youâre doing, Mr. Dalton. But you have to look at the bigger picture. Your friend was only one man. What you need to be doing, what the three of us need to be doing, is searching for Solomonâs Key.â
Nick picked up the wooden spoon and stirred the vegetables simmering in the wok. âIf we find that artifact, all these bad guys will just disappear. And then we hit Costco and buy everything we ever wanted, right?â
âNick, where is that file that you started on Gregory?â
Mr. Singh walked over to Nickâs table and picked up a file. âI found this file and did some digging before you two gentlemen returned. That is what I do best: I spend twelve hours a day digging around online, doing research, and have developed excellent digging skills. This Mr. Gregory that you mentioned works out of a run-down commercial building downtown.â
Nick hurried over and picked up the file and read. âWhoa, Singh, thatâs pretty good research! Maybe we should keep you around for a while.â
âThe first thing in the morning, Iâm going to go on a little hunting expedition.
