Chapter Five
Social and Economic Innovations
Some of the most inspiring technologies developed by the Mesopotamians were not rooted in a physical sense, such as a large structure or monument, but rather in a creative sense, such as language, literature, and mathematics. These are just some of the most impressive examples to emerge from these ancient cultures.
Writing
Writing is one of several commonly used forms of communication. People write in order to take ideas out of their minds and transfer them to someone elseâs. For example, people write millions of emails every day. They also write letters and faxes, books, magazine articles, and so on. There are thousands of written languages around the world, and throughout history there have been many hundreds more. Itâs hard to imagine life without writing. But where did it all begin?
Some researchers believe humans were trying to communicate through written means more than thirty thousand years ago. It is impossible to know for certain, but some archaeological evidence suggests that prehistoric humans may have made marks in stone and wood to denote the passage of time, such as the phases of the moon or the change of seasons. There are also several simple pictures of people and animals from ancient times, as well as sets of symbols that we still have not deciphered. No one knows why the artists created them, but perhaps the urge to communicate their ideas was powerful enough to drive them to do it.
In ancient cities such as Ur, Mesopotamians drew pictures and wrote in cuneiform.
