Local jewelers sell expensive gold or silver crawfish pendants and earrings, and clothing stores sell crawfish logo shirts.
For years an outdoor mural in downtown Lafayette had as its focus a giant crawfish holding an oil rig in one claw, surrounded by pictures of other items commonly associated with Cajunsâthe flag of Acadiana, an Acadian cottage, a horse race. The University of Southwestern Louisiana sponsored a contest for the design of a new icon for the Raginâ Cajuns in the early 1980s. The school did not specifically solicit crawfish imagery, but the winning design portrays a Raginâ Cajun astride a bucking crawfish, and the second prize was awarded to a stylized representation of a crawfish.
