1. Put yourself in the place of the reader. Imagine yourself coming to the text fresh, relatively unfamiliar with the topic or background story.

2. Write in active voice instead of passive voice. Passive voice is what might be called backing into a message. When you write, “The car was purchased by the man from Texas,” you are writing in passive voice. When you write, “The man from Texas purchased the car,” you're in active voice. It just means that the doer is shown to be doing something directly instead of indirectly. Here's another example:
