Clear and Candid
For all her racing accomplishments and awards, McArthur conveys a humble matter-of-factness about her talents. “I can’t make them run any faster than they can run, but if you can train them and get the most out of them—the best out of them—I think I can do that really good,” she remarks. “There are some that are fast that have no problems. Some that are fast have a lot of problems and you have to just take care of them; they’ll generally let you know when they’ve had enough. ‘We’d better not push him any harder or any farther—that sort of thing.’”
It boils down to an ability to read the horse. “Most of the time, they let you know they’re going to do something before they do it, if you can just pick up on it. I think it’s something you’re born with,” reflects McArthur. “If you’ve been around them long enough, you know if they’re going to blow up before they do it. You can see it in their expressions and in their gaits.” Such insights apply equally to the trail as to the track. “If you treat horses right, they’re going to give back to you double. It doesn’t matter if it’s competition or if it’s just to have them as a friend,” she adds.
The scent of an expensive cigar drifts through the air as the bugle calls the next parade of prancing horses to the starting gate. “I do think that everybody has a turn to have good luck, bad luck, whatever,” says McArthur. “I think that if you live right and do right and treat people right and are honest with yourself, that sooner or later your number will probably come up and you’ll be where you want to be.”
