I woke this morning to a sore back and pain down my left leg. As usual, it eases as I get up and move around. Meanwhile, the other kind of moving looms: Jack is rattling round in an empty Hallbankgate house, supervising Tuesday’s furniture collection. I leave Landroanec later today for Poole and a couple of nights with Linda. She and I met on our first day at UCL in 1968 – we were roomed together in College Hall. I have never asked for her first impressions, but mine were distinctly dubious: she seemed much younger and more innocent, strait-laced and law-abiding, while I thought myself so grown-up, so modern, every inch a rebel. We have been close friends ever since. After Poole, a train back to Cambridge, where Mario and his team will arrive in the evening with the contents of Store Terrace. One more week of sofa-sleeping (back on my brother’s couch!) before I finally shift into Albert Street, my new Cambridge home.

Will we swim this morning? The last few mornings have felt autumnal: chill air and a low sun. It’s been a hard and slow process to warm up afterwards. But there is such magic in early light on a rippling surface, or disturbing a glassy calm, the stuff silky against the skin. Two days ago we dodged thundery showers and gales for a four-hour stroll around Cap d’Erquy, high cliff paths, gorse and heather, wild flowers and butterflies, small coves peeling back their white sand and turquoise sea as we rounded a corner.
