‘
Aathi, do you have any brains at all?’
‘What is this, HC ayya, asking me like this?’
‘Then what? Sending me off to Chennai without any care, as if you’ve merely lost a strand of hair.’
‘Ayyo, don’t rake up my stomach burn! I went to Cuddalore, got withered like dried fish and have just —come back!’
‘What? The last-minute story, is it?’
‘You are happy now, no?’
‘Shit. We are cursed to go for both a corpse and a treasure.’
‘You came only today, is it?’
‘Don’t ask! It’s a big thing that I came back. For generations to come I won’t sleep with my head in that direction!’
‘Why, you were trapped in an awkward situation, is it?’
‘Is there ever a tale of this Rasagovalu getting caught? What do you think of me?’
‘As if I don’t know about our HC ayya.’
‘Listen to the story. I went and reached the city that day, no! It had turned really dark. I satisfied my hunger in a hotel and went to the place the Inspector said. Is that a place for a man to sleep? It was a stable for horses. Policemen were sleeping in rows.’
‘So you too became a horse.’
‘Sleep was very well there in my eyes. But I couldn’t sleep.’
‘What happened?’
‘A battalion of mosquitoes came and started attacking me. They buzzed like trains around my ears. Each one the size of a giant grasshopper. If you are not careful, it will carry off a man even. If we had buffalo tails, we could have kept shooing them off and slept.’
‘All those great lords who proclaim till their mouths tear that they will eradicate this and that, they don’t have the know-how to eradicate this. And such types we have to guard like watchdogs.’
‘Early in the morning I slept a bit. But by then everyone had woken up.’
‘Sivaratri only then for you.’
‘Things were getting done in such speed, as if they were sowing seeds in black soil. One fellow was putting polish for the boots. Another fellow was wiping the rifles…’
‘Yes, yes, as if the minister from Delhi is coming only to see them.’
‘I too pinched some for free and finished my work. We must also look neat, no?’
‘What will happen to the pride of our station?’
‘Exactly at six, all of us reached our respective spots.’
‘Where were you assigned?’
‘Go and stand by the beach, they said.’
‘Nice place only, no? You can stand there gazing at the sea.’
‘The cool breeze and all made me drowsy. I was so tired that I just wanted to lie flat on the sands.’
‘Wonderful! You longed for that also, is it?’
‘This side, government offices one after another in a row. That side, full of people, like herds of sheep on the beach. On the edge of the beach any number of buses, lorries, vans. In each one, all sorts of party flags flying. A cacophony of songs can be heard. The blessed fellows, from where did they drum up such crowds?’
‘They are showing them the city, with food and wages. As if there will be a shortage of people then.
