Chapter 19

Avorian circled and dropped down toward the landing zone in the middle of the First’s camp and Martius felt his heart fall. The emperor was climbing into a carriage to leave. The princess would already be inside.

He’d been disappointed when his orders for a scouting run had come through. He’d heard the emperor was visiting and had hoped to see Talia again.

There was one carriage and a few wagons for this visit. It appeared as if Consul Bardylis had chosen not to partake in the tour.

This realization only made Martius feel worse about missing the imperials. He would’ve liked to have helped without the scowling of the consul present over his shoulder.

He and Avorian had scouted along the border of the Galtur all the way to the western border of the province. Martius was getting more and more confident in the air and his flights mainly consisted of letting Avorian choose their path and watching the ground intently for any enemy movement.

So far, there had been nothing sighted by any of the gryphon riders. The First Company scouts had also made no contact in their treks into the forest. There hadn’t been a single ambush or skirmish since the Sprawlings retreated from their defeat on Luno’s fields.

The legion’s officers were perplexed by this, but the army would be patient and wait and be ready.

Avorian landed and Martius passed the gryphon off to the First’s stable hands. The boy walked off toward the mess hall to find a midday meal.

Visiting the mess hall now always reminded him of the previous confrontation with Aeris and Domitius. Martius now no longer believed the legion would take Avorian away from him. The emperor had supported his bond.

But there was still the question of acceptance. Martius pulled on the straps of his breastplate and continued through the camp as he pondered the questions.

Are Aeris and Domitius conspiring to turn the other recruits and legionary veterans against me? Will the other soldiers accept me as an air captain?

Martius was too deep and thought and nearly walked into another soldier when entering the mess hall. The boy shook his head and refocused his eyes forward while apologizing. He looked up to find the air captain who’d sat at the table with Aeris during the previous encounter.

“Sorry, Captain Demus. Apologies,” Martius said. They’d seen each other a few times in the gryphon pen and the veteran had barely acknowledged the newest rider.

Martius stepped to the side to give the captain space to leave. Demus didn’t say a word. He only glared and shook his head and exited the mess area. Martius’s worries and questions returned quickly, only magnified by the memory of Demus’s angry stare.

If the other air captains didn’t approve of Martius and Avorian, the rest of the legion certainly wouldn’t. Demus was a veteran. Basilas had mentioned the air captain had been with the legion for years.

The man clearly hated Martius and the new bond.

The boy wasn’t given much time to think through the latest development.
