FOR ALL THE amazing spiritual truths revealed in the tallit, there are also many myths and misconceptions associated with it. Some of the stories circulating about the tallit are not actually false—they simply cannot be proven, and for that reason I classify them as myths. I personally believe there is merit to some of the claims we will discuss in this chapter, and I sometimes refer to those stories when I teach. However, I always make it clear that the stories are quite possibly true but are not settled fact.

So as we explore the following stories about the tallit, let us remember that a believer in Messiah must trust the written Word of God as the authority for truth. Everything else takes second place. There can be no compromise in this. We can consider these stories and even personally believe they may be true, but we cannot allow commentaries or religious tradition to take precedence over what Hashem has said. With that understanding, let us begin.
