SELLING YOUR SOUL
Aislinn Winborne was tired, sweaty, and she ached in a dozen places, but she was also inordinately pleased. As she strode purposefully through the halls of the Tintagel Palace toward her suite of rooms, the last few hours of her time in the training circle replayed through her mind. She examined every move that she had made, every swing, every jab, every thrust, every parry, every spin, every dodge and duck.
According to her father her habit of reviewing her training sessions in such depth was a flaw. But her former Protector believed that it was a strength. It was an opportunity to think about what she had done well, what she had done poorly, and what she could have done better, both physically and mentally. Following her analysis, she decided that today she had done better than she had expected while sparring with the soldiers of the Royal Guard. Not only in terms of her practice with a blade, but also, and more importantly, in terms of her relationship with those soldiers.
Those members of the Royal Guard who she trained with regularly respected her and accepted her. To them she was simply another fighter in the training circle. She had been working with them for weeks. She knew them. They knew her. She felt that she could trust them. And she hoped that they knew that they could trust her. Having to survive in Tintagel on her own with her father forced to stay in his chambers and the few Battersea Guards who had accompanied her sent back to the Southern Marches, she could use all the friends that she could get.
Though she had done well in the few months that she had been here with respect to her efforts to gain some potential allies, she still missed Bryen. More and more every day, in fact. And as the days had passed, she had decided that rather than think deeply about why that was the case, she would simply accept it. Every time she spoke with her father, he liked to remind her that releasing her Protector had been a mistake. If she hadnât done so, he would be here with her now, not only as a Protector, but also as a friend. But she couldnât have done that to him, not after everything that they had been through and he had suffered for her. It wasnât the right thing to do, no matter what her father said.
As it always did, thinking of Bryen awakened the connection that still remained between them thanks to the collar. She could sense him, still somewhere far to the north in the Shattered Peaks. He was frustrated, worried, about what she couldnât tell, but he was also safe, and that filled her with a sense of relief. She hoped that she would see him again, but she understood that all depended on whether she could figure out some way to escape Mardenâs clutches. There were some words that needed to be said between them.
