Chapter 6
YES TO THE RADICAL LIFE
SOMETIMES YOU GET hit by a perfect storm, and sometimes that storm comes from God.
After leaving the church where we had been so wounded, Vicki and I turned our attention to family. We were done with ministry for a while. The best thing, we felt, was to raise our kids and provide a stable home for them financially. Vicki had returned to work with great favor from the Lord, and we both were at high points in our careers. By the worldâs standards we had it all. So it was a total surprise when God asked us, once again, to give it all up.
I had closed my CPA practice a few months earlier in favor of a new challenge. A decade as a CPA in Manhattan had left me burned out. The volume of work, the pressure of the decisions, paying salaries and benefits to my employees, and the many hours interacting with each client overwhelmed my mind and emotions. My blood pressure went sky high and wouldnât come down even with medication. I felt I was wasting away, working hard to take a couple of days off, then working like crazy to catch back up. I was always behind the eight ball to manage cash flow and advise peopleâs businesses.
When the opportunity came to work full time for a client as their chief financial officer, I jumped at it. I gave my old business to a faithful employee and began a new phase of my career working for an up-and-coming fashion company that designed couture evening gowns for celebrities and was expanding into the home furnishings accessory market. I loved the people and felt energized by the artistic side of the business. Plus, it was exciting to be part of something that was growing so quickly. When I started, there were six people and a shipping guy. A year and a half later there were fifteen of us.
God did tremendous things, helping us get into trade shows, magazines, and major department stores. People thought I was calm and cool. They didnât know I would close the door and pray like crazy that we would make the right decisions. All day long we were working with overseas factories that produced our growing line of products. I was so pressed for time that when my son Daniel needed help with homework, I did it via a conference call from the office.
Vicki had renewed her ambitions of climbing the corporate ladder as well, and her identity became more and more tied to her job. But there was a price to pay. Home life was suffering.
Vicki and I were growing apart, and we fought more or less constantly.
âDaddy, you know it has been about a year since we ate together as a family,â my daughter Sara informed me one day. It hurt to hear thatâand hurt even more that she had been paying attention.
