Innerva and Aradia stood outside the saloon, watching the fiery residue from the

explosion vanish, a few errant flames still licking a section of the bar’s roof. Then came a whining sound.

The witches looked up. SPLAT! Something slammed to the ground at their feet.

It was the raggedly-decapitated head of the demonic Santa Claus.

“That was unexpected,” Aradia said, staring at the head.

“It was just as planned, sister.”

“But the book…the wizard will be upset.”

“The wizard needs to be mindful of his place.”

“He commands us.”

Innerva smiled. “For the moment.”

“What of the grimoire?”

Innerva’s gaze dropped to the ground. There was a circle of metal, flush with the blacktop. Innerva flicked a finger and the circle, a manhole cover, twirled up into the air. The witch cast the manhole sideways like a frisbee.

“We go down.”

“And then?” Aradia asked.

“We wait for them to come to us.”

The witches jumped into the air and dropped through the manhole cover. They landed in a tunnel, fifteen feet below the city streets.

“How will we bring them to us?” Aradia asked.

“I’ve been thinking about that.”

“And?”

“We need to give them an incentive to stay on the move, Aradia. We need to harness some of the things that dwell in this accursed place.”

“What kind of beasts live in a place like this?”

Innerva held up a hand. A spoke of light beamed from her index finger, showering the tunnel with white light.

The eyes of several dozen rats flashed.

Innerva grinned wickedly. She summoned a loop of plasma in the air and then conjured up a spell that rolled over the creatures. Instantly, they grew until they were the size of small dogs.

The rats’ sharpened and enlarged teeth now protruded from their mouths. Their scarlet-colored eyes glowed in the murkiness. The verminous pack chittered then melted into the shadows as they trotted off like pigs, still squeaking as they followed the scent of Adam’s group.
