Jon took a fresh look at Natalie’s condo as he nibbled on the eggs. The living room sprawled out before the large glass panels that divided it from the balcony, well-illuminated by the sunshine spilling through. Natalie’s good taste was even more noticeable during the day. He paid attention to the subtle patterns of colors throughout her condo, all of them pitted against the impeccable whiteness of the carpet. The furniture closer to the balcony was brown and gold, while the decorations on the walls were green, gold, and red. All the blue you could ever wish for came from the clear sky outside.

He wondered how the living room would look on a cloudy day. Then he remembered how it had looked when he’d first seen it the previous night. The arrangement of furniture and colors had a completely different feel according to the mood of the sky outside. It was simply brilliant! He gave Natalie a score of 9.5 out of 10 for good taste. That was a generous score considering that he had given himself a solid eight for his work at his own apartment.

“You’re making breakfast tomorrow,” Natalie said out of the blue.

“I thought you cared about your health.”

She chuckled. “Whatever you gotta do, breakfast is on you tomorrow.”

Perhaps it was the thought of omelets at a diner that triggered it. The image of Teresa’s smile appeared in front of Jon, dimming all else. He became stiff, hearing Teresa’s tender voice in his head, calling him “sweetie” while stroking his hair. Grief bubbled up inside him, and Natalie seemed to have noticed what was going on.

“Have you thought about what we’re doing today?” she said, trying to steer him away from his sadness, lowering a rope for him to climb out of that well of sorrow.

He managed to grab his mug and sip his coffee. “We’re going to see Mo Huang,” he blurted out a moment later. His eyes were getting moister with each passing second. He became quiet again, tears on the verge of rolling down his cheeks.

Natalie stood up and walked closer to him. She touched his hand gently, her face reflecting his own pain.

Slowly, a fire burned in Jon’s eyes. “No one has the right to take this much from others!” he spat out. “No one.” He gave a decisive nod. “We’re going after the Sword of Gold. We’re going to fight!”
