Lorelei became more hesitant the deeper into the passageway they went. At each junction she stopped, a troubled look on her face. Tyr didnât want to put into words what he feared: she didnât know where they were. Now, when there were other reasons to suspect Surtur would guess their purpose without capturing them and finding it, he bemoaned her decision to memorize the dark elfâs map rather than bring it along to consult on the way.
The tunnels, after a brief upward slant leaving the chamber where theyâd fought Sindr, plunged downwards again at a steep grade. The heat in the air was hideous, though at least the walls werenât aglow from lava coursing just beneath a crust of rock. Tyr knew the temperature would only grow worse as they struck towards the strongholdâs lower vaults, ever nearer the molten core of the volcano.
Cracking sounds from up ahead of them made the Asgardians stop. For a terrible moment Tyr pictured the tunnel breaking apart and magma flooding the corridor just like the torrent heâd unleashed upon Sindr and the fire demons. They paused, waiting for any sign of such a calamity, but nothing transpired. There was only the steady cracking of rock and the sharp ping of metal.
âSounds like someone working up ahead,â Bjorn offered. His eyes brightened. âMaybe itâs the forge.â
Tyr shook his head. âMore like a mine,â he said. He took a few steps forward. Faintly, he could hear voices. The gruff, brutal tones of fire demons. âGuards up ahead, at any rate.â
âAre they waiting for us?â Lorelei asked, an edge of dread in her tone.
âI donât think so. No, theyâre too inattentive to be waiting in ambush,â Tyr assured her. âIt sounds like only two of them. If Sindr had set an ambush for us, sheâd use a lot more warriors.â He glanced over at Bjorn. âThereâs no telling how many turns are between us and them,â he advised, noting the curve in the passage. âWe might have to move quickly to keep them from getting away if they spot us before we can reach them.â
Bjorn ground his teeth. âJust show me where they are,â he snarled, fingering his axe.
âDonât get ahead of me,â Tyr cautioned him. He nodded to Lorelei. âJust in case it is some sort of ambush.â
The Asgardians crept down the corridor, the voices and the sound of work growing more distinct. Tyr began to hope that theyâd be able to catch the fire demons unobserved with the way the corridor continued to twist and turn. Then they rounded a final bend and saw a long tunnel before them, as straight as an arrow. There was a good thirty feet between themselves and the fire demons who swung around to glare at them.
âSo much for doing things the easy way,â Tyr swore as he charged into the guards. Heâd underestimated their numbers as well. It wasnât two fire demons, but four who stood in the tunnel. They werenât expecting trouble, however, and lost precious seconds reaching for their weapons.
