Chloe Dumas led the group out of the building onto the treelined Boulevard Saint Michel, a few blocks from the Seine. A broad mix of people casually strolled about, engaged in conversations while window shopping. Bumper-to-bumper traffic congested the road, and the constantly blaring horns gave life to the Latin Quarter neighborhood.

“Great meeting, Chloe,” said Danzig, patting her gently on the back.

“I’ve known Tamimi for years and have spoken to him about the MFP a few times in the past two months to get him warmed up, but I think Chaim really closed the deal.”

“So you think he’ll do what he says?” asked Beer.

“Yes, if the MFP does what it promises. He’s honorable.”

“Good, then can we head over to the Tour de Temple now?” Klein asked.

“Before we go anywhere, I need to change clothes,” said Dumas.

“Chloe, you don’t need to do that. You look great,” Beer said.

She gave Beer a dismissive glance, then said to Danzig, “I always bump into people I know, everywhere I go.” She added a glare that warned: don’t argue with me about this.

“How much time do you need, Chloe, and where do you want to meet?” Danzig said.

Klein brusquely said, “We need to head over to the Tour de Temple right now.”

Dumas stepped in front of Klein. “Mr. Klein, the Temple Tower was demolished over two hundred years ago. There is nothing left of that entire Knights Templar complex. Nothing. A courthouse and Metro station sit where it used to be located. I can’t imagine why you’d need to go there.”

Adrenaline shot through Klein’s body. “Ms. Dumas, it’s none of your business. I need your cooperation. You’re our tour guide today, and first, you say you need to change clothes. Then I tell you I need to go to the Tour de Temple, and you question me? This is really not helpful.”

“You’re absolutely right, Chaim. I apologize.” She smiled and checked her watch. “I’ll meet you in thirty minutes in front of the Metro station at Rue du Temple and Rue de Turbigo.” She did an about-face and briskly walked away.

Once Dumas was out of earshot, Beer exclaimed, “What’s with her? One moment she’s totally awesome, and the next, she’s fucking crazy!”

Klein added, “Danzig, this isn’t going to work. Just call and tell her thank you, and we’re going on our own. It’s not hard to find the Tour de Temple.”

Danzig returned a blank stare. “Chaim, I’m in charge of your security. Explain to me why we have to go there.”

Klein shook his head, then replied, “When I was in Ethiopia, there was a fresco on the ceiling of the chapel that I came to understand depicted the Knights Templar complex. I want to see it. Here, take a look.” Klein pulled out his phone and showed Danzig a picture.

“Makes sense. But Chloe knows her way around Paris better than us. We’re sticking with her. Let’s go.”
