Telling Others About Your Plan
Kids are often curious about any changes their friends or classmates make. It’s natural for kids to want to know where a friend goes when he leaves the classroom. Are they being nosy? You may think they are . . . and they might be, sometimes. But mostly, they probably just want to know if they are missing out on something fun. Or they may just miss having you in class!
Have you spent time thinking about what you want to say if someone asks you questions about where you are going and why? Here are some quick tips and ideas:
• If you seem okay with talking about your special help, others probably won’t think it’s a big deal.
• Answer the questions honestly, but don’t worry about explaining everything about your IEP. If someone asks where you are going, you can say “occupational therapy” if that’s where you are headed. If they ask why, you can just say “to work on my handwriting,” or some other reply based on what you do there.
• Remember that it’s important to get the right help for you and your learning style. Knowing that you are making good decisions for your future can help you be positive when others ask questions.
• Act casual when you leave your classroom. That way, others won’t think you are embarrassed or that you dread going to your special help.
• If you aren’t sure how to handle a specific question or situation, you can ask an adult you trust for suggestions or advice. Teachers have probably talked with lots of children who have received help. They may be able to give you advice that has worked for other students.
Sometimes kids may tease people who act, look, think, feel, or do things differently from them. Have you ever been teased? Or have you ever teased others? A lot of times, teasing is not the same as bullying. Sometimes teasing is really another word for joking (that accidentally upsets another person). Teasing can really hurt. If a friend you trust teases you, you may just laugh or calmly say, “Hey, that’s not funny.” You know the friend isn’t trying to be mean. But if another kid says the same thing, you may feel hurt or embarrassed.
If someone does start saying hurtful things about your special work, what can you do and say? Here are three important guidelines:
• Act confident, casual, and cool. Kids tend to tease more if they get a big reaction from you. (If you need help doing this, take a look at Positive Attitude Tool #2: Find Ways to Feel Calm.)
• Do what you need to do. It’s okay to leave at your scheduled time, even if others notice. You are making a smart decision to get the help you need.
• Say something that is quick, informative, and comfortable for you if anyone asks you questions or teases you.
If you need help remembering these guidelines, remind yourself of the word ADS. Each letter in this
