Chapter 15: The Decision
After they finished their conversation with their mother, Scout decided immediately that he was going home, but Slip didn’t want to go yet. The arguing began subsequently. Scout tried to convince him all weekend that he needed to come home, but Slip wouldn’t listen. News of Slip’s dad’s involvement in the vice president’s kidnapping was made public over the weekend, and no one seemed to know how to talk to Slip and Scout about it. Both Slip and Scout avoided the rest of the Supes all weekend, not saying anything to anyone during mealtimes.
Scout was finally able to speak with the principal on Monday morning about going home, securing a ticket for both himself and, without his consent, Slip. They were flying out the next Monday, in exactly one week. Scout explained this to Slip right before class, instigating another drawn-out verbal battle of wills, but it was shortly cut off by Ms. Willoughsby. She said, “I encourage you to work out travel details in your free time, since class begins now.”
Slip fumed all throughout class, not because he didn’t want to go home to be with his mom, but because Scout had already decided that Slip would fail. As soon as the tone rang out for lunchtime, the brothers immediately went out into the hallway.
“I don’t care how bad you want to stay!” Scout yelled. “You have to come home!”
“Just because you feel like quitting doesn’t meant that I have to, too,” Slip replied crossly.
“It’s pointless for us to stay here. Mom needs us right now. She’s all alone, and we need to be there for her. I don’t even care about the stupid test, especially now! We’re never going to pass it. Never!”
“Well then just go without me!”
“Slip, stop being unreasonable! You’re coming home too, whether you like it or not.”
“Please stop fighting, you two,” Felicia pleaded as she and the other Supes came into the hallway.
“But if you do insist on fighting, at least throw some punches. You know, so it can be interesting for the rest of us,” Hopper added.
“This doesn’t concern you,” Slip said.
“It concerns all of us,” Felicia said resolutely.
“We’re a team,” Edison said.
“A team?” Slip knew that his temper was about to get the better of him, but he kept talking anyway. “If it weren’t for your dad, we wouldn’t even be in this situation.”
“Oh, my dad?” Edison retorted. “Your dad kidnapped the vice president. And you knew him way better than I knew my dad. You were raised by a villain, I was abandoned by one.”
“And that’s exactly why I know that my dad isn’t a bad guy!” Slip’s dad would never have done something like that. The only explanation was that The Creator had blackmailed or threatened him into working for him. Whatever had happened, The Creator was to blame. “At least he didn’t shoot the vice president!”
“Stop it y’all!” Sugar shouted. She was sobbing.
“At least hold off until I can pop some popcorn,” Hopper said.
“Will you come off it?” Edison demanded.
