It worked. It all worked.

I felt weird lying to my mom about my glasses. By “weird” I guess I mean I felt bad. I was thinking after that I could have just asked her for new glasses. But I needed a reason to change them, like you said, with the other kids in my class. And it worked. Marina said I look cool.

What’s next?

Maxwell,

I am pleased to learn you are happier with and more confident in your appearance, and clearly your classmates are seeing that.

I value the truth greatly. That surprises many people. They think being a villain walks hand in hand with telling lies.

The truth, Max, is that we all lie, each of us, every day to everyone in a thousand different ways that are both spoken and unspoken; lies we mean to tell and don’t mean to tell. Even the most honest of us do this, whether we can admit it to ourselves or not. We lie to other people in order to not hurt their feelings.

You have to choose how and why to lie. You did not lie to your mother in order to hurt her.

Now, to the business of what comes next for you and our mission.

One of the things that has kept you out of the groups formed by your classmates is that too many of them only think doing and being certain things are worthy. They do not believe you have the qualities they have been taught to think are the only qualities worth having. You are not an athlete. You are not a great speaker. It is okay to not be good at any of these things, and to not want to be good at them.

We have improved your look and, at least for now, we have removed your biggest threat to being accepted by having John Properzi sit out of school for a time. Next, we will help your other classmates see that what you have to offer as a person is worthy of their praise. You are good at many things. What we must do is teach your classmates to see value in what you do well, instead of looking down on it and you, because your skills do not match what they think of as valuable, or to put it another way, what they think is “cool.”

To that end, I have arranged for an opportunity to present itself to you.

As I have told you before, I am only giving you advice. You must make the choice to act, and you must reach your goals on your own. You will have to decide to accept this opportunity, and if you do, you will have to make the most of it without my help.

I believe you will rise to the challenge, as you have done so far.

Cordially,

Maximo
