chapter 7

eight legs underground

The Saturday morning sun was rising in a blue sky as Will, Ivy, and Linus rode their bikes down the dirt road toward the crumbling Svengali Fairgrounds.

Looking over at Ivy and Linus, Will couldn’t help but smile. Riding bikes with friends reminded him of warm summer days when he and Marcellus would spend entire afternoons riding around Brooklyn or across the bridges into Manhattan. East Emerson had green trees and rolling hills instead of honking cabs and sky-bound buildings, but the feeling was the same.

As Linus took the lead, Ivy nodded to Will. “Hey. I’m still wondering, if you don’t have a ring, how do you see the stuff I do?”

“I’ve been thinking about it too,” Will admitted, “and still no idea.”

“Have you ever seen supernatural stuff before?”

Will shook his head. “Only in video games and movies and comics. I’ve always been drawn to fantasy, but I never believed in it. I guess maybe I hoped it was real, but until I came to East Emerson, it never was.”

“Maybe you’re cursed,” Ivy said.

“Actually, that would make a lot of sense,” Will mumbled to himself, thinking of his life. “So...how about your ring? Why do you wear it? You could take it off, and just be, you know...normal.”

Ivy whispered, “It’s the only thing my birth parents left me. I don’t know anything about them—except that they wanted me to have it. When I wear it... I dunno... I feel closer to them. Does that make any sense?”

Will thought of Fitz, who was a gift from his dad. He needed to find Fitz, not just because he loved his dog, but because Fitz was a connection to happier times. Fitz made Will feel like Dad was still around. “It makes perfect sense.”

Ivy sniffed. “Anyway. Being normal is overrated. I like being different.”

“No one likes being different,” Linus interjected, having slowed his bike to join the conversation.

“I do,” Ivy said. “Who wants to be just like everyone else?”

Will and Linus exchanged a shared glance. Will was the first to admit, “I wouldn’t mind fitting in with everybody. It’s nice to belong.”

Linus added, “The human being is a social animal by nature. We require the recognition and acceptance that can only be provided by our peers.”

“Whatever.” Ivy charged ahead, not looking back.

Linus shook his head. “I love my sister, but she does prefer being contrary to being honest.”

The trio parked their bikes at the abandoned park entrance. Once again, Will found himself staring up at the giant clown statues holding up the sign.

Linus took one look at the sign and said, “Seriously, Ivy? Defacement of private property is a felony.”

“Did I miss something?” Will asked.

Linus pointed to the handwritten word disappear. “That’s my sister’s handiwork.”

Ivy giggled, pulling a thick black Sharpie from her back pocket.

“You wrote that?” Will asked.

Ivy smirked. “Guilty as charged. But come on, no one cares about this place.”

“You wrote on the Welcome to East Emerson sign too, didn’t you?”

Ivy shrugged. “I thought we were here to explore. Come on.
