Jack hadn’t quit smiling all week. He couldn’t stop thinking of Rosie, of how much he laughed around her. He hadn’t felt this normal, this at ease since before he’d moved to California. He was so glad he’d surprised her at the hospital, his insides warming at the look on the kids’ faces when “General Justice” walked in to see them.

As for Rosie’s face, well, her expression made his thoughts run wild for days.

He’d even gotten the disappointing news that he hadn’t gotten cast for that part he’d wanted. Ann shared that the casting director “didn’t find him right for the part,” which, for her, was code for “not serious enough” for the dramatic role. But even that couldn’t affect his good mood; it was unfortunate, he told himself, but there would be plenty more auditions. He would eventually prove himself to be more than an action star.

He sat in his apartment Friday morning, eating breakfast before heading over to meet his personal trainer at the gym. His phone buzzed with a text from Ann.

We need to talk. On my way over.

“No idea what that’s about,” he mumbled to himself. He let his trainer know he’d be late, grumbling at his calendar.

Jack was bummed he couldn’t see Rosie for the next two Saturdays, thanks to more cons in northern California. And he had to attend some fancy-pants celebrity dinner the weekend after that, which got extremely in the way of his wanting to fly back to Crystal Springs again. At least I can afford it.

He wanted to see her whenever he could when he had the time right now; his schedule only got busier in coming weeks with more “General Justice” filming and obligations. There’d eventually be another gig and another role where he’d be on location for several weeks, making it even harder.

Ann burst into his apartment, startling him out of his thoughts. “Jack.”

“Ann,” he mimicked. His grin faded at her expression, a frown marring her face.

“We have a problem.”

Jack’s stomach clenched, his heart sinking as he suspected why she looked so upset. Ann showed him her phone, the bright screen displaying an image of two smiling friends, clearly having a casual night out.

The website, however, had circled what sat behind the two subjects: Jack and Rosie, sitting cozy together at a table as they enjoyed their third date. Jack recognized her dress instantly, remembering how pretty she’d looked that night.

Ann zoomed out, where the website’s headline read: Jack Bennett Dates Mystery Girl.

“Oh no,” he breathed.

“Oh yes,” Ann confirmed, taking her phone back. Her fingers flew again, probably to his agent or the studio producers or any number of people who were about to make angry phone calls to them.

Jack pushed his breakfast plate away, no longer hungry. He ran his hands over his face, groaning behind his palms. “How did this happen?”

“It happened because you were too busy mooning over your girlfriend.” Ann rolled her eyes, a red thumbnail tapping on her phone screen. “This is what happens when you aren’t constantly paying attention.
