My discovery of Augusta’s secret so unnerved me that it colored the rest of the evening. On the ride back to the parsonage, I was distracted and could barely drive. John Marcus had to repeat a question twice, asking me about Godwin and Rich’s trip to Sarasota. When I felt his curious eyes on me, I pulled myself together. He was too sharp not to notice my state of mind. I needed time alone, a chance to mull over the shock of Augusta’s love for this man, to think back over the things she’d said to me, bits and pieces of our talks. When I parked the car in the garage, John Marcus put a hand on my arm.

“Dean? What is it?”

“W-what do you mean?” I looked his way but turned my head, quickly.

“Did I do something to upset you?”

“You do something to upset me—oh! Oh, no, nothing like that,” I gasped.

He looked at me reproachfully, turning his head sideways. “Come on. I thought we’d become friends. You can trust me, Dean. Didn’t I just prove that to you?”

“Prove it to me?” I sounded like an idiot, but couldn’t help it.

“You were nervous about taking me to Godwin’s, afraid I’d say something about their marriage. But I wouldn’t have done that, you know.”

“Oh! I know.”

“I want us to talk about all that, sometime this weekend. We’ll have to find some time alone, okay?”

“Fat chance of that.”

“I’ll make the time. I want to explain my viewpoint to you, Dean. There are people in a position to help Luke Shepherd and Godwin and Rich, believe it or not.”

I looked at him, and he returned my gaze calmly. No wonder Augusta loved this man! If I wasn’t careful, I’d fall in love with him myself.
