RAY RUBBED my shoulders. My head drooped forward, my chin less than an inch from my collarbone. I splayed my palms out on the dining room table.
âThis good?â
âMmmmm.â
âIâll take that as a yes.â
His thumbs worked downward along my trapezius muscle. âYouâve got quite a few knots.â
âMmmmm.â
He laughed. âLetâs go upstairs. Iâll work them out.â
My phone rang. The word Dad lit up the screen.
Ray stopped massaging my neck. âSusan,â he said. He didnât have to say more, because with the inflection on the second syllable, I clearly understood the part he didnât say out loud: Donât you dare answer that phone.
I glanced up at Ray and pursed my lips. I hit decline. Then thought about the case I worked earlier this summer. A woman named Madison Garcia called me one night and I didnât answer my phone. The next morning she was dead. I picked up my phone and looked up at Ray. âI promise this will take a minute. You go upstairs. Iâm right behind you.â
Ray shook his head. âDo what you gotta do, Susan.â
I hit Dad in the Recents list. He picked up on the first ring.
âSorry for the late call,â Dad said. âI was reading through the old files and didnât realize what time it was. This could wait until morning.â
I glanced up at the clock. It was almost nine. âWell, you have my attention now. Whatâs up?â
âRemember I told you about Jimmy and I going to Helen Blackstoneâs house to break the news about her husbandâs murder and her baby, Elizabeth, was there, but the older kids were in camp at the time.â
âYeah, I remember.â
âSo get this, I just found my notes from when we went back to her house to tell her that Mac committed suicide.â He paused. âThis time all her kids were home and I jotted down the names of the older ones. Ready?â
âYeah Dad, ready.â
âDerek and Thomas.â
âThe bartender in North Adams mentioned that a Darren or Derek was seen chatting it up with Shirley Gardner. And that this guy got a call from someone named Elizabeth. Are you thinking what Iâm thinking?â
âI sure am.â
We just got ourselves three solid suspects. Now we just had to find them.
This might just be a case of multiple perps after all.
