Chapter Twenty-Four

Kylara hadn’t felt chilly in the mountains but she now wished she were back in the cooler climate. The thickly jungled island they were on was hot and humid in a way a girl from the desert did not find exactly comforting. She was accustomed to being able to step into the shade and win respite from the heat but there, even inside the cavernous concrete tunnel that led into the chamber of a volcano, she could not escape.

It followed them inside, at home in the moist air as much as the sweet, cloying scents of the tropical flowers were. However, even though both her sense of smell and sense of temperature were both assaulted in ways she was not happy about, it was her sense of hearing that seemed most overwhelmed.

“Well, I never did think I would see the day that I would see Kylara Diamantine on my island! Then again, you can never tell who will become a Person of Consequence. I hadn’t thought I would be one, for example. Murder investigators aren’t famous very often. Well, not the real-life ones and their short-lived sidekicks—compared to dragons anyway—are even less famous. And yet I was one.

“I thought I still was until the Steel Dragon shipped me off to this island again. The first few months were fine, you understand, but after a while, you start to miss being able to go out to get a cappuccino or smoothie or whatever. Oh, that reminds me…where are my manners? Larry nodded his graying head. “Drew did say you were all in something of a pickle.”

“I’ll bring them all here, then. Okay?”

“Oh, right. You can do that. Well, have at it. Here I was giving my mages a rest, although Lord knows I take it too easy on them. Why, in my day, we’d take on a dragon in the morning and bring a runaway mage in peacefully in the afternoon.”

Kylara glanced at the five other mages. Each of them was still breathless from their exertion of opening a portal to the opposite side of the world and the subsequent march through the tunnels. Somehow, Larry was not winded despite him talking the entire time while they marched deeper into the shell of the dead volcano that made up the center of this island.

“I know we’re in a hurry but we might as well get into the central chamber,” he said and gestured to a doorway at the end of the concrete hallway.

“Sure.” Kylara hurried ahead and stepped into the room, although room was an understatement for the space. It was the entire interior of a volcano. Some work had been done to level the bottom but other than that, it looked frighteningly natural. Veins of lava turned into black stone ran up and down the interior walls and the parts of
