Ben and I strolled back into town together. Elijah had been persuaded to stay and enjoy a small nip of Horaceâs specially imported French brandy. I didnât expect to see Elijah again that day.
âWhat do you think Horace hoped to gain from that meeting?â
âAn afternoonâs entertainment?â Ben undid the top button of his tunic.
âHe does make you feel as though youâre a pawn in his game of chess.â I laughed.
âHe certainly does,â Ben replied with feeling.
âDoes he interfere often?â
âNot often. But he always knows whatâs going on in town. And he has the ear of people in high places.â He waved the manila file.
âIâm beginning to realise how wide his network of contacts is.â
âHe usually just wants to help. But it can be unnerving. Itâs not only Superintendent Cobbe I answer to.â
âDo you think his information will help in this case?â
âItâs given us an insight into Lord Timpsonâs character. But Iâm not sure what his creditors would gain by harming him. Not if they knew Lady Timpson was likely to bail him out.â
âWhat do you make of Lady Timpson?â I could imagine her reaction to police questioning.
âA difficult nut to crack. Her account of where and when she left her husband during their ride that morning is a bit hazy. If we press her, she says sheâs a busy woman and canât possibly remember every detail.â
âWill you question her again?â
âNo, the superintendent says not. Thereâs nothing to suggest she was involved. He wants us to concentrate on other leads.â
I felt that Lady Timpson was being let off too easily. But then again, how plausible was it that sheâd attack her husband in broad daylight?
