Ben and I strolled back into town together. Elijah had been persuaded to stay and enjoy a small nip of Horace’s specially imported French brandy. I didn’t expect to see Elijah again that day.

“What do you think Horace hoped to gain from that meeting?”

“An afternoon’s entertainment?” Ben undid the top button of his tunic.

“He does make you feel as though you’re a pawn in his game of chess.” I laughed.

“He certainly does,” Ben replied with feeling.

“Does he interfere often?”

“Not often. But he always knows what’s going on in town. And he has the ear of people in high places.” He waved the manila file.

“I’m beginning to realise how wide his network of contacts is.”

“He usually just wants to help. But it can be unnerving. It’s not only Superintendent Cobbe I answer to.”

“Do you think his information will help in this case?”

“It’s given us an insight into Lord Timpson’s character. But I’m not sure what his creditors would gain by harming him. Not if they knew Lady Timpson was likely to bail him out.”

“What do you make of Lady Timpson?” I could imagine her reaction to police questioning.

“A difficult nut to crack. Her account of where and when she left her husband during their ride that morning is a bit hazy. If we press her, she says she’s a busy woman and can’t possibly remember every detail.”

“Will you question her again?”

“No, the superintendent says not. There’s nothing to suggest she was involved. He wants us to concentrate on other leads.”

I felt that Lady Timpson was being let off too easily. But then again, how plausible was it that she’d attack her husband in broad daylight?
