On a long rein the rider should still have a contact to the horse’s mouth but the horse should go in a more natural outline, with the head lowered and the neck stretched.

On a completely loose rein the rider lets the reins out to the buckle. There is no contact with the horse’s mouth and the horse has a lowered head and neck.

Accompanied by the relevant weight aid, the hand is moved away from the horse’s neck and over slightly in the direction of the intended movement. Once the horse has accepted this aid the other hand should give to follow the active hand.

Rein aids are never to be used in isolation. The hand alone cannot force the horse to give at the poll.
