Chapter 19

YOU MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT the arrival of the five Doray students would keep the school population captivated well into the school year. In truth, people were more preoccupied with not failing exams and, as autumn approached, with the upcoming festivals and shows. They were too busy to spend time thinking about a bunch of clan kids. The Doray students, for their part, were keeping a low profile, sticking mostly to themselves and not doing anything that might make them stand out. They tended to fade quietly into the background, disappearing amongst the crowd. Maybe the clubs they’d joined were helping on that front, or maybe I just didn’t care enough to notice them around.

My life was way too full of classes, club training and sessions at the dojo to have any time left over for keeping up with school gossip. There were some, however, to whom this was no obstacle, and who liked to dump piles of random information on me without my consent. It was like a flowing tap without a handle…

“Imagine — between the two of them, they’ve already turned down more than fifty different guys!” Olunt gushed feverishly at me during break.

“Who cares?” I shrugged. “They’re clan girls. They’re probably already engaged.”

“Everyone’s placing bets on what the total number of rejections is going to be…” Olunt went on, not really listening — until he suddenly froze and stared at me, wide-eyed. “You think that’s why they’re saying no?”

“I can’t say for certain, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve already had a list of suitable candidates picked out for them since birth. And I’d guess getting romantically involved with a classmate would be considered improper for them, to say the least,” I shrugged again. “You could ask some of the other clan students if it’s like that for them.”

“Nah, the other clan kids here are ordinary people. They’re not afraid to get to know their classmates,” Olunt retorted.

“Well, we’ve never had anyone from the Doray clan here before. Maybe their clan has its own rules. Plus, the kids they sent here aren’t from the clan’s upper ranks — maybe the rules are more relaxed for them. Or maybe they don’t even have rules at all.”

“You know what…” Olunt replied, deep in thought, “you might be right. Which means…I know what bet to place!”

Abandoning the conversation, Olunt grabbed his things and disappeared. I guessed he was rushing to place his bet before break ended. I wasn’t going to get in his way! But if people had started placing bets, the Doray kids were surely going to find out about it. From there, it wouldn’t be hard for them to fix the results and take the prize money for themselves…But we still didn’t know them well enough to say for certain how they might behave, so I didn’t want to make any predictions.

Break was over — time to head to class. Our teachers did not look kindly on latecomers, who were usually subjected to a very pointed round
