As I slipped into a hoodie and pajama bottoms and headed back onto campus, I told myself I just needed air. I wasn't going anywhere in particular.

My gift wrestled the lie the whole way to Blue House. That asshole. Wasn't it my choice how or when I lost my virginity? He knew how I felt about him... But I couldn't just derail my life, my calling, to be somebody's girlfriend. And fuck virginity. I should have had sex with Kai years ago. Every year I didn't lose it, it turned into a bigger deal.

I wasn't fooling anyone, least of all myself. I had loved Kaito since I met him, and when he went away to prison… Ugh. What was with that guy? I gave up relationships altogether because I couldn't be with him. Was it so wrong for me to want to express my love for him in that way one time before I had to fulfill my oath to this city? He'd had sex with Miranda and god knows who else and he couldn't find it in him to make love to me once?

I wasn't sure what my plan was. Barge in and... demand sex? Yell at him? Seriously, where was I going with this? I ran through some potential opening lines that crossed the spectrum all the way from "Get naked" to "You asshole."

I was too in my head to notice that his door was ajar. Too worried I'd lose my nerve to do anything but thoughtlessly push the door open without warning, I froze.

Miranda sat on Kaito's bed, her face buried in her hands as she cried. Kaito was on the floor at the center of the room, sitting with his back to Miranda.

They were both sweaty and panting. Even from the doorway, I could see Miranda's makeup smudged all over Kai's face and hands. The immediate thought should have been that I'd just missed a romantic interlude, but several things prevented that theory from growing legs. I trusted both Miranda and Kai, and the energy in the room was too morbid for a funeral.

Miranda looked up but couldn't catch her breath to explain. She nodded towards Kai. I walked around him to get a view of his face. His eyes were wide but vacant.

"What happened?" I asked, reaching for his face, but he pulled away.

I turned to Miranda. Her hand shook as she covered her mouth.

Unable to bear the suspense of it, I pushed my gift recklessly into Kai.

He spoke but didn't look at me. "I saw what happens."

My eyes flicked up to Miranda. A vision? Fear filled me. "What was it?"

"Rei," he breathed. "You looked so beautiful in your wedding dress that I swear my heart stopped."

I tore my gift back, but Kai kept on of his own volition.

"In front of all our friends, we became husband and wife." Kai started to shake, tears brimming his eyes. "Our life together was full—" He choked, shaking his head, his tears falling. He turned to me. "It was so much more than I dreamed.
