âBreathe in,â the man at the front of the assembly said, and Alan sucked in a deep breath alongside what must have been two hundred others. He held it for several long seconds. âAnd release.â
He let out a long breath, turning into a strained cough that he choked off. A chuckle sounded beside him. Alan glanced over to see Grace smirking at him. She was wearing casual white clothing with a Solace patch on the shoulders; an outfit that reminded Alan of a karate gi. The bulk of the meditation participants around them also wore the same, though a few like Alan simply wore casual exercise garb like his T-shirt and baseball shorts.
âLet out all the impurities within you,â the man at the front said, striding along his raised platform. He pointed at one woman and corrected her stance with a few calm suggestions.
âAnd who is that again?â Alan whispered to Grace, squinting to take in the distant figure on a televised screen. He seemed like a cult leader; a whip-thin black man was a serene expression and a resonant voice, who hardly even needed the microphone tucked into his white suit.
âThatâs Devas,â Grace whispered back, stretching her left shoulder and leaning closer. The whiff of her perfume was a pleasant sensation. âLike I told you before,â she scolded him lightly. âThe head of Solace.â
âRight, right⦠and you believe in becoming âoneâ with the Universe,â Alan said. âAnd that aliens are âgodsâ that created life on Earth.â
Grace frowned over at him. âYou know, I can pick up the skepticism in your voice pretty clearly. Iâm going out of my way to pick you up and bring you here, after all.â
âRight, right,â Alan quickly replied. âI appreciate it.â
Someone hushed them and Alan fell silent once again. At least Devas wasnât openly ranting about aliens. Instead he merely took them through several circuits of stretches and meditative stances. By the end of the hour with Solace, Alan felt his clothes damp with sweat. Despite his skepticism, he was feeling a bit better as well.
âAny chance we can talk to this Devas?â Alan asked as the routine wrapped up. The televised image of Devas had quickly disappeared after the hour of meditation, and light chatter was breaking out among the group of devotees as music was filtered in through the massive roomâs sound system. âI mean, heâs not even here⦠the guyâs got better things to do than lead his own group? When was this recorded?â
Grace snorted. âSo skeptical, and now you want to talk to him? No, the leadership group is inaccessible to most lay members. They havenât been here for a few days.â
âI just thoughtâ¦â Alan shrugged. There didnât seem any harm in telling her. âWell, I was wondering if thereâs some sort of connection between Oumaumau, your fatherâs disappearance and all the other groups that have gone missing, and the top echelons of Solace. In factâ¦â he peered over the others, puzzling at the group of Solace members now taking down the sound equipment.
