Chapter 13
Once we left the town and were walking on a narrow gravel causeway between two bodies of waterâinlets from the sea, I supposeâTor finally let me talk. He had been shushing me, and walking very fast so Iâd be too out of breath to speak, ever since weâd left my Uncle Gabriel.
âYou didnât find out about Farrell Dean,â I said. âHeâs why weâre here.â
âHow could we ask?â Tor kept a tight grip on my arm. âWe arenât supposed to know anything about him. And I did ask whether anything interesting had happened other than the lunatic invader, and Gabriel said no. I think heâd count yet another mysterious stranger as interesting.â
âThen whereâs Farrell Dean?â I said. âHow are we going to find him? What if heâs injured, sick, lost? What if those men found him?â I tried to pull my arm out of Torâs grasp. âLet go. Youâre hurting me.â
Tor let go. âMaybe heâs here but hasnât found Gabriel yet,â he said. âWe can ask your grandparents if theyâve heard anythingâwe can ask them things we canât ask Gabriel. They wonât notice if our questions are odd, and if they do theyâll forget soon enough.â
âWe have to find him,â I said again, fighting down panic. Where was he? What would I do if we never found him, if the riders got to him first and took him, killed him? I might not even know what had happened. He could vanish and leave me here on this island alone. Yes, Ezzie was here, but Ezzie was sick, and I didnât know how to take care of him. I needed Farrell Dean.
âWe have to make sure Farrell Dean is okay,â I said.
Tor gave me an exasperated look. âWe will. As you said, thatâs why weâre here. Weâll find him, warn him not to mention you, and then weâll get out of town before Gabriel smells a rat. I do not want to get on that manâs bad side.â
Gabriel Drewblood did seem a little intenseâlike Rafeâbut I couldnât see that he was anyone to be feared. Then again, perhaps I was expecting him to be too much like Rafe. I of all people should know that Gabriel had his own personality, his own character.
âTor, thereâs something I need to tell you,â I said. He kept walking, fast, as if determined to put as much space as possible between us and Gabriel.
âTor!â I said, hurrying to keep up.
He kept walking, but this time he at least looked over at me.
âYou know how Fiona and I look alike?â I said.
Exasperation flooded back into Torâs face. âOf course I know. And I know you arenât her but I fully intend to persuade everyone here that you are. Donât keep revisiting this, Fiona.â
âNo, itâs not that. Itâs just â¦â I took a deep breath. âGabriel Drewblood looks exactly like a man I knew in Optica. A good man. A man who got killed last week trying to save our city.â
Tor stopped in his tracks. He stared at me for a long moment.
