On Tuesday, Karl had gone to the mall with Pam and picked up a full wardrobe of clothes for work. Somehow, the shooters from the night before had not hit her car with their bullets. Either they were the worst shots in New England, or they had simply tried to scare them. Why? He had no idea.

In the afternoon, Pam brought him to MIT for a visit. She had to run by and speak with one of her professors, so she had him hang out in the library to wait for her. This was the first time since landing on U.S. soil that Karl had an opportunity to make contact with his handler at the Agency.

Back in the day, the CIA had a number of rudimentary means for officers in the field to make contact. One of the easiest ways was to simply go into a random phone booth with a handful of coins, calling a switchboard with a coded message. That message would funnel down to a handler and it would put into motion a series of dead drops and other hands-on exchanges.

Of course, a phone call now could be easily intercepted by both the Americans and the Russians. Coming from within the U.S., the NSA was supposed to keep their hands off of calls, unless there was a specific trap on the line.

Now, since Karl didn’t have his normal Agency secure cell phone that would not only scramble his voice through a highly-secure encryption scheme, but it would also route the call to a direct satellite used only by the CIA for such calls. The NSA couldn’t even touch those calls. Without that phone, though, Karl had to use a secondary form of contact.

His Agency contact, Roddy Erikson, developed an online account that placed items up for sale on a rotating basis. None of the items actually sold to real customers, but they were instead purchased by another account Roddy owned. So, essentially, Roddy sold non-existent items to himself at exorbitant prices. Karl knew Roddy’s account, so he quickly used an MIT library computer to put a bid in on a preserved pig’s ear that resembled John Wayne. The quick email account he had established gave away his location and his current name, Nick Silva. Of course, he would never use the email.

Pam had approached just as he finished and they headed back to her place.

Three days had passed and he still had not heard from his Agency contact.

Karl had spent the last couple of days integrating into his new job at Boston Aerospace Systems. He got his name tag, his computer access and clearance, and a quick orientation to the facility. BAS had its own cafeteria, so he had no reason to leave the building during the work day. Which wasn’t a problem for him, since he still didn’t have a car.

But he was getting along so well with Pam that they agreed to become roommates. That was fine with Karl, since it came with the benefit of pleasurable evenings.
