Like Birkerts, these people are uneasy because the technology will impel them to have a certain kind of connectedness with their fellow men and women, using some new and unfamiliar tools, or risk being left behind. Even the thought of it is going against their natural grain.

“But surely,” says another troubled listener, “this whole approach is more relevant for giant organizations like yours. We are just a tiny institution in a tiny country. We don't have your kind of funding. We can't afford to mobilize these kinds of resources.”

I reply that sharing knowledge could be even more vital in a tiny organization because one can overcome the disadvantages of small size through connecting with other organizations, while retaining the advantages of agility.

I make the case, but the contentious questions continue, amid a few positive comments. But in general, I am dealing with the sullenness of skeptics, in place of the exultation I had just come across in London.
