An hour later, after dinner, we’re both stuffed. The food here is healthy and delicious. Tonight, Nova ate eggplant parmigiana while I inhaled a seafood paella. For dessert, she had this peach ice cream sundae, and I dared to try the fruit tart even though the waitress said she couldn’t vouch for it because it wasn’t made in-house.

As we finish our wine and desserts, the dinner buffet is dismantled, and a man settles in at the grand piano in the corner of the room. He starts playing immediately. He’s playing “Hello” by Adele, and it’s cool. I’ve never heard the piano version. Nova is smiling softly and humming as she offers me some of her sundae. I stick my spoon in the beveled, tall glass filled with ice cream, whipped cream, and sprinkles. “It’s good, but Patti’s Moose Farts will always be my favorite.”

Nova laughs, her head tilting back and hair sliding over her shoulder to display her long smooth neck, which now has a slight purple mark forming on it. Oh shit. I gave her a hickey. Fuck. I manage to wipe the shock off my face before she looks at me again. I’ll tell her about it later. No need for her to freak out here. People would be confused. After all, a husband and wife can mark each other, right? Instead, I reach over and gently pull some of her hair over her shoulder, hiding it. “I like your hair loose like this.”

A few couples have gotten up and are slow dancing to the music.

“I always have to wear it up at the restaurant,” Nova says and smiles. “It’s nice to let my hair down. Figuratively too.”

We stare into each other’s eyes, not seeing each other in this moment but reliving the past moments in the hotel suite. I swallow and she gives her head a little shake like she’s trying to wake up from the erotic memory. She reaches out with her spoon. “Let me try that store bought tart of yours.”

“Why does that sound raunchy?” I ask and smack her spoon away.

“Everything we say right now sounds like innuendo.” Nova giggles, and her wide, dark eyes watch as I cut a chunk of tart out with my fork and lift it up to her mouth.

She hesitates a second but then let’s me feed her. She chews slowly, thoughtfully. After she swallows, she says, “The custard is lacking zip. A little nutmeg or cinnamon would help. And the pastry is a little doughy, but it’s not horrible.”

“No one makes pastry as light and flakey as you,” I say and finish my tart with one more big bite. “Ma says it makes her jealous.”

“Well, her homemade garlic aioli makes me jealous, so we’re even.”

“She promises to leave that recipe to one of us before she dies,” I tell her. “It might be you since I think Terra will eventually focus on putting her therapy degree to good use.”

Nova’s smile loses its brightness. “You really think Terra will leave the business?”

“Not completely, but yeah.
