CHAPTER 2

THREATS TO PEACE

The British saw the colonists’ acts of rebellion as threats to peace. British officials hoped the arrival of General Thomas Gage in Boston in May 1774 would calm the situation. England’s King George III had made Gage the governor of Massachusetts. For the first few weeks, Gage believed he would be able to subdue the rebels. But after a few weeks, his hopes were dashed.

In August he sent a letter to the secretary of state for the colonies expressing his concerns: “In Worcester [Massachusetts] they… have been purchasing arms; preparing them;… providing powder; and threaten to attack any troops who dare oppose them… I [fear] that I shall soon be obliged to march a body of troops into that township, and perhaps into others… to preserve the peace.”1

By February 1775 Parliament declared the colony of Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion. Gage was expected to take care of it.
