THE CURRENT STATE OF DOG AND CAT DISEASE
The physician should not treat the disease,
but the patient who is suffering from it.
âMOSES MAIMONIDES
What is disease and does it have a purpose?
We can begin to find an answer to those questions by first considering its derivation: âdiseaseââan uneasiness about the body.
And what is -itis?
-Itis is Latin for inflammation. Youâll notice how many diseases end with -itisâhepatitis, arthritis, vasculitis, encephalitis, conjunctivitis, otitis, and on and on. Thereâs a reason for that. The body creates inflammation as a part of healing and also detoxification, and we may not necessarily want to suppress these processes with drugs or other chemicals. If you get punched in the eye, twist your elbow, or cut yourself, itâs going to swell up. If it doesnât swell up, itâs not going to heal as efficiently. Unfortunately, as a medical society, we have learned how to repress that -itis, and as a result we suppress the healing.
In my first book, I discuss Heringâs Law of Cure. Itâs so important, itâs worth mentioning again. Constantine Hering is considered to be the father of homeopathic medicine in the United States. Although he was born in Germany in 1800, he emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1833âstarting a practice there and eventually founding the first school of homeopathy in the United States. According to Heringâs Law of Cure, âAll cure starts from within out, from the head down and in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed.â1 To get well, explains Hering, the patient must go through the crisisâexpect it, look forward to it, and work toward it.
While there is no bible of natural healing principlesâno Ten Commandments brought down from Mount Sinai by Mosesâyou might recall that I provided sixteen New Principles in the Spirit of Healing in chapter 1. Here are several that I think are worth highlighting in this chapter on disease:
Before disease, there was health.
Disease is not something that just happens to you or your animal companions, but something that you allow to happen, either consciously or unconsciously.
An illness is natureâs way of creating the fundamental conditions necessary for healing called homeostasis.
Everything necessary for healing is built into every living being. Itâs up to us to remove the obstacles to healing instead of adding new ones.
Cancer is a confusion of nature caused mostly by man to now, in too many cases, outsmart himself.
The immune system functions at its best when it is in a completely unaltered state.
