Luit's New Policy

In 1977 a group of secondary school children visited Arnhem to observe the chimpanzee colony for a couple of days. When I asked them who they thought was the leader, twenty-one of them said Luit, three said Nikkie, and two said Yeroen. The children knew nothing about our dominance criteria and I had purposely given the males new names so that my students and I could discuss the apes without fear of influencing the children in any way. According to the children Luit was the dominant male because he was more self-assured and bluffed more impres sively than the other two, because the members of the group were most in awe of him, and because Luit was so huge. From their description Luit had obviously grown into the position of alpha male. Like Yeroen before him he constantly had his hair slightly on end, so that he appeared bigger and more powerful. He looked magnificent.
