THE FEELING

Mardus was punched out of sleep when the passion came pouring down the tethers. It took him a moment to figure out what was going on, why the tethers would be feeding him passion when the night before it had been confusion and mourning.

But it was what it was and he wasn’t going to sleep any more with the tether open like that. So he rose and stretched, looking at his fellows who were similarly awake and slightly confused.

“We should make breakfast,” he said. “They will be a time yet, but she will be hungry and we can do this for her.”

The passion faded out as he was chopping potatoes, her tether falling into a restful silver color and he felt her fall away, satisfied and languid.

They were joined by Asrim a few minutes later, he smelled of her, of her passion, but Mardus was the steadiest and he was able to hold in the feeling that the scent gave him.

The others weren’t so easily able to. He watched them blanch and sway as the scent hit them, but watched them master themselves and go back to their breakfast tasks.

“Is she alright?” Rami asked in a shaky voice. “Is she feeling better this morning?”

“I think so,” Asrim said, coming and taking the knife from Mardus to finish the potatoes. “She slept through the night, no nightmares like I was expecting her to have.”

“Good,” Rami finished his task and took the cubed ham to Mardus who had lit the stove and was heating the pan. “I’m glad she was able to sleep.”

“I am too,” Asrim scraped the potatoes into a bowl and took them to Mardus, who smiled at him.

An awkward silence reigned in the kitchen as Mardus made the omelettes that he had planned for breakfast. One for each of them including Natalie’s brothers who appeared in the doorway still shamefaced and startled at what was going on in the kitchen.

“We have to go,” Joseph said. “Will you tell Nat that we love her and that we wanted to say goodbye?”

“I’ll let her know,” Dacius said and Mardus turned from the stove to watch them leave. They were good lads even if their older brother needed a good whack upside the head.

Which he would be happy to bestow if Clark ever hurt Natalie again like he had the night before.

The food was steaming on the table when Natalie’s tether bloomed golden and warm and she came out of her room in a loose wrapper dress to smile at them all.

“I made breakfast,” Mardus said, “we all did, so sit and eat.”

“Thank you,” she looked around at all of them. “Did my brothers leave?”

“They said that they loved you and they wanted to say goodbye but didn’t want to wake you.” Dacius said, smiling back at her.

“I didn’t mean to sleep so late,” she shook her head but the smile didn’t dim. “I’m not usually one to sleep past dawn.”

“You needed the rest,” Mardus said, bending himself to his breakfast. “Especially after yesterday.
