The guards, their waxed long coats belted tightly around them, paced and watched as the scarred officer went through the large group of bodies.

Some would be sent to the gulag Vorkuta, others were given long prison sentences, and the unhealthy and elderly would be executed. It was that simple.

A man spoke up from the back, who had been given eight years in Vorkuta. “What happens now, where are we going?” Heads turned and saw a man in his fifties, (or could have been his seventies), his hair peppered and short, face long underneath his cap, his back bent.

“Have an appointment, do you?” The guards laughed.

The officer with the scar walked up to him and stopped, but the man kept talking.

Katya wished he wouldn’t.

“I… I just want to know, where are we going? Will I see my family again? They were in the other truck and we were separated. I just want to know—”

The pistol fired in reply. The silence was their answer. Silence would be their answer as they waited in this makeshift prison for months on end.
