Chapter 23

Cameron Snow, Prince of Muri

The city of Holter, in Muri

Dirt and dust rain down from the ceiling as the small room shakes. Blasts, getting progressively louder, give me the cue I’ve been waiting for.

“We need to leave now,” I say, purposefully adding a layer of panic to my tone.

“Kora said to stay…”

More blasts. The hinges on the door groan as the earth shifts again, letting in rays of light through the cracks. I peak my head out of the door to witness the explosives on the roofs set the sky on fire.

“We need to go now!” I shout, commanding my team.

“Where will you go?” Jena asks frantically.

I pause for effect. “There are caves in the eastern part of town. We can hide in them, come out once everything has died down.”

Nico nods. Turning to Rye Gen and Rye Tula, he orders, “Go find Wade and Ilka! Meet at the caves!”

What a stroke of luck… I’ll only have Nico to deal with. At the mention of Ilka though, my heart snags- I pray to the Creator that she made it out safely.

The streets swell with panicked townspeople seeking to flee the chaos. They follow me as we snake our way through the crowds, none of the people aware of their prince hiding beneath a tattered, dirty cloak.

Small groupings of stone buildings make up the post guarding the fencrinum caves behind them. The guards who should be protecting the fencrinum have abandoned their posts.

“The unit posted here is probably responding to the attack,” Land mentions, looking hopefully in my direction. We can’t help them. Not now at least.

“The caves are just around the corner.”

More explosives go off. I buckle into myself, briefly losing my footing over the rocky terrain. The ashy winds bring the taste of smoke, my nostrils flaring at the smell of fire. My people… my jaw locks with the increasing irritation, but when Jena passes me to enter the smaller of the open caves, I settle the guilt down into my stomach.

“We can hide in the shadow here,” Nico tells Jena who finally removes the hood from over her face. The old lady, Ulna, does the same and takes a seat on a large boulder.

My heart picks up speed. Nico stares around the dark cave, his roaming eyes checking for hidden dangers. My foot hooks around his ankle, tripping him to the hard ground. My sword rests on his neck a moment later.

“Cameron!” Jena shouts. “What are you doing?”

“Give me the orb.” My unit, in shock, stay still. Their oaths will keep them from interfering.

Jena’s eyes narrow, “You lying, deceitful white-child!” she shouts. “Release him now! You’re never getting this orb!”

Nico slowly lift his hands. My foot grinds into his ankle until his shout bounces off the cave walls.

“Give me that orb, witch.”

She glares at me, lips pursed into a thin line of anger. Raising her arm with her hand flat and palm towards me, her eyes narrow. But then the tense lines on her face soften as surprise replaces her bravado.
