BY THE TIME DECKLIN turned the key in his condo’s door, an unpleasant weight took root, convincing him he needed to put his cases aside for an evening. Throwing his keys on the foyer table, he kicked off his shoes, then plopped on the couch, rubbing his eyes. But, as he sat, he couldn’t help think of Cecily, her voice echoing in his mind. “You don’t know when to give it up,” she often chastised. “You need to take care of you. Us . . .”

Advice he chose to ignore.

Once again, he allowed his work to interfere with his personal life and, once again, he opted to avoid confrontation rather than fight for his relationship. That, however, was something he rarely considered, not realizing his ineptitude to deal with something uncomfortable carried a pain he chose not to endure. In fact, whenever he thought about Cecily, Decklin refused to acknowledge his skill in oft-practiced avoidance techniques. What good does fighting do, he often wondered, that evening no exception. Besides, it takes two . . .

That was true.

Shortly after moving to Miami, Cecily began to change, though she rarely discussed why, causing Decklin to wonder if she recognized it. And, that was what Decklin couldn’t understand—if they were planning on spending their lives together, shouldn’t she at least have let him know she was unhappy?

One would think.

Water under the bridge, he thought as he suddenly got up, snatched his keys from the foyer table, then checked his hair in the mirror, deeming himself presentable enough to attempt a conversation with Amelia Sandoval. As thoughts of Cecily receded, Decklin knew what he needed to accomplish, and chastising himself for failed relationships wouldn’t do a damned thing when it came to figuring out who was playing a dangerous game in Miami. Lesson learned?

Not really.
