Silent Talk

How do you tell the difference between ‘That’s wonderful!’ when the speaker thinks something is genuinely fantastic and the rather flat ‘That’s … wonder … ful’ when they really mean the opposite, or a sarcastic ‘That’s won … derful’ when they were actually bored by what you said. The answer, of course, is through listening to the phrasing and the tone of voice: in this particular instance, the voice goes up on the ‘won-’ in the first case, stays flat in the second, and may well stress an unexpected syllable in the third.

Judging Relationships from Tone of Voice

Figure 5.4. Percentage of instances in which subjects correctly identified whether the relationship between two speakers in a brief scrap of natural overheard conversation was positive or negative. Subjects listened to the same clips in the original full audio version or in versions where either the words had been digitally obscured (delexicalised) or converted into pure tones (pitch only). Had they been responding at random, they would have been correct only 50 per cent of the time (indicated by the dashed line). Source: Dunbar et al. (2022)33
