Chapter 18

Yuki-onna paced through the snow some distance from the shrine. After her realization, she’d quickly excused herself, saying that she had something she needed to do. In actuality, she had been so shocked by the revelation of Xin Tao’s feelings, that she needed time to process it.

She unconsciously returned to the place where she had tried to freeze him. Standing by the massive mound of snow, she stared at the tunnel he’d dug out of it. The outer layer of snow had hardened into ice that gleamed in the morning sun. However, only a few stray rays of sunshine penetrated into the depths of the structure.

She crawled into it and found comfort in the cool enclosure. Mimicking the meditative pose she’d seen Xin Tao take, she tried to clear her mind, concentrating on her breaths. The refreshing scent of the snow made the orb even more tranquil, but her thoughts would not quiet.

Xin Tao wanted her.

This caused a mixed response within her. On one hand, it made killing him a whole lot easier. All she had to do was approach him gently. Originally, she’d thought that she would have to spend time gaining his trust and pry his secrets from him. Now, that was no longer necessary.

On the other hand, his desires made her feel threatened all the more. The only romantic experience Yuki-onna had had with a man showed her how dangerous they could be.

That man had seemed to change so easily once he had gotten what he’d wanted from her. Then, he had kept her prisoner, hidden away in a small village far from his luxurious home and legitimate family.

In an angry fit of denied lust, Hiroshi had then strangled Setsuka unconscious. Her life would have ended if Tsurara hadn’t offered her another chance. With the spirit’s help, Setsuka had instead gained strength from the icy cold that almost leeched the life from her.

What if Xin Tao was also pretending? He had an agenda in approaching Yuki-onna. She knew that much, and it did not align with her plans.

She remembered how she’d hunted Hiroshi down after her transformation.

He’d been shocked, thinking her a ghost.

She’d talked softly to him, pretending not to remember what he’d done. Slowly, she’d gotten close to him and pressed her lips to his. Only she had drained him so slowly, freezing him inch by inch, starting at his toes and working her way up.

When she finally pulled away from him, his face had frozen in a grotesque contortion of agony.

She had then dragged his frozen corpse outside to the backyard of his residence and left it under a tree. Hearing a noise, she’d hurried to a side alley to hide. However, someone cried out that he’d seen a ghost or someone in white.

Yuki-onna had been wearing the white robes of a Shinto priestess. In the moonlight, the material seemed to glow.

So, she had broken into a clothes shop to change. She had stolen a robe that couldn’t be seen well in the dark. Then, she’d topped it with a matching red cloak with black fur around the collar.
