Daily Limits

The daily limit, also called the creel limit, is the number of fish of a particular species that an angler may legally keep in a single day. Daily limits vary from species to species and sometimes from water to water.

Species that commonly have daily-limit restrictions are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, northern pike, walleyes, muskellunge, trout, and salmon. Species with no or very liberal daily limits generally include bullhead, yellow perch, black crappies, white perch, bluegills, pumpkinseeds, and rock bass. In some cases, such as with sturgeon, the daily limit may be none.

In addition to daily limits, there may be seasonal limits. For example, a river in Alaska may have a seasonal limit of four chinook salmon. Also, sometimes there are possession limits. This limit usually consists of two or three daily limits and is intended for anglers who go on weekend fishing trips and want to take more than a single day’s limit home.
