Fun Facts: Tribes Are Built Around Shared Values and Goals

From an RO DBT perspective, a tribe can consist of just two people. Tribal bonds begin when two people (or the members of a group) commit to make self-sacrifices to benefit the well-being of other tribal members or the tribe itself, without always expecting anything in return. [See lesson 8, “Tribe Matters: Understanding Rejection and Self-Conscious Emotions,” for more details.] Tribes are usually founded upon shared values and goals, although some tribes we are born into (for example, our family, our nation), and others may be forced upon us (for example, an inmate in a prison). However, most of the time, we choose our tribes. The motto of a healthy tribe may be best represented by the motto of the lead characters in the 1844 book The Three Musketeers, by Alexandre Dumas: “All for one, one for all!” Interestingly, according to this definition, our RO DBT skills class is a type of tribe; we share a common goal of learning new skills, and we strive to support each other in achieving this. Wow! ☺
