I slept fitfully, waking up what felt like every fifteen minutes, until I couldn’t stand it anymore. I felt lightheaded and nauseous, and keeping my eyes closed made the room spin. I wasn’t in the least prepared to actually get up and face, well, anyone or anything, though, so I stayed in bed.

It was still dark when I gave up and pushed myself back to sitting, turning on the bedside lamp. I picked up my book again, but reading was hard when the words kept swimming and droplets of water kept marring the pages.

I don’t know how long I sat there, staring into the white space between the black smudges of words, when the bedroom door opened again.

Mason walked over to his side of the bed, and I expected him to say something, but he didn’t. He climbed on top of the covers and crawled over so that he could lie on his side, knees drawn up, his head on my thigh and one arm around my legs so that his hand rested on my hip.

Now I was confused, but at least it seemed like he was less angry with me. My heart pounded in my chest, and I drew in a shaky breath, uncertain about the right thing to do.

I’d had to move my burned arm to let Mason put his head in my lap, but now I cautiously lowered it again, resting it on his upper arm and using my right hand to gently stroke his braids.

I felt like I had to say something.

“Mace—I’m sorry. You were right, I—”

“No,” he murmured into my legs. “I wasn’t.”

I couldn’t possibly have heard him correctly. “W-what?”

I felt him sigh heavily, his arm tightening around my thighs. “I wasn’t right.” He didn’t elaborate.

I swallowed, because I didn’t know what the fuck to say to that. I wasn’t about to be like yeah, you were totally wrong, especially since he hadn’t been, but it also felt weird to ask him to explain what he meant, since clearly Jackson had lost control of his magic again, and I’d been hurt as a result.

“You were, though,” I said, finally.

Mason’s fingers tightened against my leg. “No,” he half-whispered. “You were right. I—I was afraid you wouldn’t be able to handle Jackson. Not because I don’t think you’re capable, but because I don’t understand your magic.” He turned his face a little more into my thigh, his voice muffled, although I could still understand him. “I don’t know what I’d do if he—” He didn’t finish the sentence.

I wasn’t going to finish it for him.

I sniffled, then rubbed away the new tears that had tracked their way down my cheeks as he spoke.

“I can’t lose you.” His words were rough, raw.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I answered, trying to keep my voice steady. I still didn’t understand why he wasn’t still absolutely furious with me. Why he wasn’t yelling at me or even speaking sternly.

He didn’t say anything, although his arm tightened again.

I kept stroking his hair, not sure what I could say to make things better.
