6 CHAPTER NAME
Stood outside the Council chambers, Marduk raised his hand to knock on the door, but couldnât bring himself to do it, even though he had been stood there for an hour.
Short, stout and burly, Marduk's red hair was long and thick, as was his beard. His skin was almost as black as coal, his eyes shining like two diamonds.
He needed to speak to the Seven, but the thought of standing alone in their presence was intimidating.
The Seven ruled their Kingdom, the only one of the six Kingdoms that didnât have a sole monarch, instead choosing to rule as a democracy by virtue of being the oldest of their people.
Summoning his courage, he raised his hand to knock on the door when it was pulled open and Marduk found himself looking up into the grey eyes of Erishkigal.
âA door works better if you actually knock on it.â Her voice was regal, with a hint of wry derision.
Her grey skin was smooth as marble, her eyes a darker shade of grey with no iris. A pair of majestic but slightly tattered wings were furled against her spine, gilded snakes wrapped around her wrists.
She towered over Marduk by a great deal, as one of the tallest Goddesses in all of the six Kingdoms.
âI was about to, Erishkigal, but you opened it before I could.â
âYou have been stood out here for an hour without knocking, Marduk. Snails have crossed the throne room quicker.â
Erishkigal had a voice that creaked like an old door, a sound that was somehow ominous and full of menace, even though she didnât raise her voice.
âHa. That is humorous.â
âWhat brings you to our chambers? We did not summon you.â
âI wish to talk to you and the other Council members, if you have the time to listen to one of your subjects.â He was unable to keep his voice from sounding petulant.
âWe have a Kingdom to run, Marduk. I would not expect you to know anything about such a topic. The six Council members and myself are busy.â
âThat is what I thought. You pompous and self inflated relics know little of what your subjects feel.â
Erishkigal didnât move or speak, but he suddenly had the feeling she was incredibly angry at him. Her expression was as stoic and inscrutable as ever, but there was something about her that radiated fury.
Then she smiled.
âYou are right. We focus too much on the running of this Kingdom to ensure that our people are happy. Perhaps we should let our realm fall into ruin and subjugation.â
Marduk didnât have an answer.
A voice called Erishkigal's name and she looked back into the Council chambers. No words were exchanged, but she gave a nod.
âIt seems my fellow Council members wish to speak to you.â She gazed at Marduk for a moment, then swept back inside.
Hesitating for a moment, Marduk took a deep breath and followed, stepping into the throne room.
The moment he was inside, the heavy doors slammed shut behind him, which only increased his trepidation.
On a raised dais, the Seven gazed down at him imperiously.
