Agatha

Agatha could scarcely breathe with Grimm so blasted close. His hair was still damp from a hasty bath after his sparring match with Augustus, and she thought of reaching up to touch it. Mercifully, the duchess approached, her face tight as Grimm peeled away from the wall nonchalantly.

“Lady Olivia,” he purred as she curtsied to him. “You are looking lovely as always.”

“You are too kind, Your Highness.” The duchess lifted her skirts and began to walk away.

Agatha watched as an intense fury darkened Grimm’s features, but he quickly smoothed his face and called out the duchess’ name. When she turned back, Grimm was smiling, but it was a viper’s smile.

“I know my wife is as ravishing as these sculptures”—he gestured a hand toward marble renderings of kings and queens of old—“but I’m certain someone such as yourself couldn’t possibly mistake her for one and miss this exquisite woman standing here with me.”

His hand snaked around Agatha’s waist and he pulled her to his side. Time slowed for half an instant, and Agatha was acutely aware of every place where their bodies touched. He smelled of clean soap, musk, and coffee. It was the perfect storm and it left her head foggy.

The duchess looked between the two of them, her face set in a barely concealed sneer. She dipped into a low curtsy to Agatha. “My apologies, Your Highness. I did not see you there.”

Grimm watched her go, muttering something about a wretched old hag under his breath along with a few other choice words Agatha stored for later use. When the duchess and her guards rounded the corner, he untangled himself from Agatha.

“We can’t discuss this here. Meet me at dusk in our rooms and we’ll go somewhere more private. Until then, I suggest you return that vial to whomever you swiped it from immediately.”
