When I arrive at Save N Clip, there is no guarantee that Karen will be working. Not wanting to draw attention to myself, I grab a cart and begin shopping for the food I need for the week anyways. The store is a ghost town, and maybe it is the early morning hours, or maybe it’s because it isn’t exactly a quality food mart.

I’ve never been to this grocery store before but am personally pleasantly surprised with it. I can’t afford the fancy co-ops in town or the organic grocery stores where it’s $75 for a single bag of food. Save N Clip is a grocery outlet, mostly discontinued products and day-old produce. But I don’t mind bruised apples or nearly expired cans of garbanzo beans. Growing up with limited resources at Garden Temple meant being thankful for what we did have.

And right now I’m thankful for the deeply discounted brand name sugary cereal that will make the girls squeal in delight. I add two boxes to the cart and keep pushing, grabbing a container of Greek yogurt and a bag of Valentine’s candies that might be a year old. I figure the preservatives in the hard candy will have left them fresh enough.

As I finish my shopping, I head to a checkout lane, my eyes widening as I see Karen tying an apron on and stepping up to a register. She’s just getting to work, so my timing is perfect. Maybe she had to wait until Sonny got off to school, just like I had to wait until the girls caught the bus.

I begin unloading my groceries on the black conveyor belt, choosing my words carefully as I get closer.

“Who’s asking?” she asks, and I can tell right away she is a people person. I bet she was great at direct sales. It’s one of my weaknesses, letting people get close enough to feel comfortable.

“I’m Gray West, and I used to work with Patrick Kelly.”

Her smile fades, and she shakes her head. “I’m not supposed to talk about him. Or his shitty business. Excuse my language.”

Knowing I need to tread lightly to not ruin my in with her, I say, “It’s okay, I know you two had a … falling out …”

Karen snorts. “Falling out? That man tried to destroy my life when I was at my most vulnerable.” She grabs my boxes of cereal, scanning the food as she talks. “I feel awful that he died, was murdered,” she adds in a whisper, “but honestly, I’m not surprised.”

Her flippancy shocks me. “Really?” I counter. “He was good to me.”

“Maybe he changed his ways. But I doubt it. He still in
