Post-Mortem

Farzad Mistry’s mysterious death made headlines.

On social networking sites, people were uploading pictures, engaging in protest campaigns, arranging prayer meetings, creating ‘Justice for Farzad and Saahil’ pages, and more.

At Zarine Software, employees were afraid to report to work. Zarine’s top clients expressed concern about their ongoing projects, despite the CEO’s assurance of timely delivery.

“A tough time ahead for us,” Vikrant Sharma told Shravan Trivedi.

“This is ridiculous,” said Cyril Mistry, Farzad’s father.

“I can understand what you must be going through, Mr Mistry. I am just stating facts,” replied Dr Dighe, trying his best to console a bereaved parent.

“He never touched alcohol in his life. How can you say he was drunk?”

“I found traces of a very strong sedative in his stomach. It was mixed with his drink.”

“The driver said that Farzad jumped in front of his truck out of nowhere. It was so sudden that that by the time the driver pulled the brakes, Farzad was run over,” added Inspector Thadani. “Besides, the road was wet and slippery.”

“Why did the driver run away?” asked Cyril Mistry anxiously. “May be my son was alive. Couldn’t he get him to a hospital?”

Inspector Thadani continued, “The driver fled, as is very common in hit-and-run cases.”

“When Farzad left home at 11.00 p.m., he was sober. We all had dinner together after he returned from office,” Cyril Mistry said coldly.

“I am really sorry, Mr Mistry,” said Dr Dighe. He watched the old gentleman walk slowly towards the hospital exit.

“Excuse me, Dr Dighe.” The doctor turned around and shook hands with Mili.

“I would like to see the body.”

“Come with me,” said Dr Dighe.

Once in the pungent smelling room, Mili tried to imagine how horrible Farzad’s wife must have felt seeing her husband’s lifeless body.

“From what I understand Dr Dighe, the drug that you found in Farzad’s drink results in dizziness. Is that correct?” asked Mili.

“Yes, along with nausea and severe headache. Even if the person has not consumed alcohol, he will feel intoxicated. It is dangerous and can be fatal,” Dr Dighe responded.

“We know that somebody sedated Saahil with an injection. Now we learn that Farzad was drugged too. But I do not think these drugs are available in the market,” Mili stated bluntly, looking at Dr Dighe’s report.

“Right! But somebody who has been a medical student, even if not a doctor, or comes from the medical background, can have access to these drugs,” said Dr Dighe.

Mili listened to the doctor carefully.

“I believe we are going for the DNA sample, right doctor?” asked Mili.

“Yes,” replied Dr Dighe. “Though the tattoo on his right arm and the clothes he was wearing helped Farzad’s father identify him, we want to be hundred percent sure.”

“Time of death?”

“Between 11.30 p.m. and 1 a.m.,” confirmed Dr Dighe.

“It fits in like a glove, Dr Dighe!”

“What?”

“Considering that the same person killed Farzad and attacked Saahil, your confirmation of the time of death helps! Saahil was attacked at around 4 a.m. Enough time for the murderer to kill Farzad and then attack Saahil on the other side of the city.
