CHAPTER 17

MONICA

“Do you think Martha’s Vineyard is too overdone?” my mom asks as she types away at her laptop.

“No, Mom, I think it’s nice,” I tell her absentmindedly, finding it hard to keep my attention on her.

With my parents' 40th wedding anniversary coming up, she is busy planning. Frankly, I’m not sure why she’s taking the time. The fact that they’ve made it this far seems like enough of a celebration.

My parents were young when they had Tyler out of wedlock. They waited until he was older to get married and move into their current house. I’m still surprised that they’ve made it this far.

“Are you sure? Maybe we should do it somewhere else,” she says, continuing to stress over the location.

“Maybe,” I mumble, too busy thinking about Jared.

How has that man taken over my mind?

“Will you please pay attention?” she asks, sounding annoyed at how spacey I’m being.

“Sorry. I’m paying attention,” I say sheepishly as I turn to face her.

“What has gotten into you? You seem so unfocused,” my mom asks, looking at me inquisitively.

“Nothing,” I tell her, but it comes out too quickly, making me seem even more suspicious.

She narrows her eyes, sizing me up as she assesses whether I’m telling the truth. The thing about my mom is, she’s usually on the nose when it comes to this type of thing, making me worried that she’s going to find me out.

Finally, her eyes widen as a smile appears on her face. “It’s a boy, isn’t it?”

I hate how good she is at this.

Putting a look of confusion on my face, I tell her, “No, it isn’t a boy, Mom. Look, I’m focused.”

I try to look more intrigued at what she’s doing by scooting closer to her and pointedly looking at her computer.

“Yes, it is,” she says in a sing-song voice, looking so pleased that she figured out what’s up.

“No, it’s not. I’ve just been overwhelmed with work,” I lie easily, hoping that the excuse is believable enough to throw my mom off my scent.

Her expression of glee drops somewhat, telling me she believes me at least a little bit.

“Is everything okay? A boy sounds a lot more interesting than work problems,” my mom says, and I scoff at her comment.
